Downstream Summit | June 9, 2023
If you weren’t at Downstream Summit, here’s what you missed:
Taking place at the 14th annual Water Canada Summit in Ottawa, attendees were offered a tasty breakfast and a few moments to get to know one another. After some great chatting and a cup or two of coffee, they headed off into 20-minute roundtable microsessions where early career professionals and students networked and connected with water industry experts to discuss various issues.
This provided wonderful opportunities for students/early career professionals to explore future career paths in the water sector, ask questions and seek advice from those who have already ventured into their water careers while making meaningful connections that will serve them well into their careers.
After many conversations, conferring of contact information, linking over LinkedIn, and shaking of hands, attendees rejoined the summit Main Stage where insightful keynotes and thought-provoking panel discussions continued in the afternoon.
“This was an awesome event to meet water industry leaders, current water sector students and other young professionals. This event demonstrated that there is no single pathway for working in the water sector and that many opportunities exist. A memorable quote from this event was, “working in the wastewater industry is a recession-proof job,” which is something I didn’t fully realize before and will be sure to share with my students in the Environmental Technician program. I hope to attend more events like this in the future!”
