Policy

Conservation

ALUS is a charitable organization that envisions a future where all farmers and ranchers produce ecosystem services from nature-based solutions alongside food and fibre to help solve the crises of biodiversity loss and climate change. Through its turn-key community-developed, farmer-delivered program, ALUS supports more than 360 community leaders across 39 ALUS communities in helping over 1,760 farmers and ranchers build and actively manage 52,600+ acres of nature-based projects on their lands. This represents a significant area of 213 square kilometers, equivalent to the size of a small national park.

ALUS projects encompass a diverse range of initiatives, including the creation of wetlands, grasslands and tree and shrub plantings. These projects play a crucial role in capturing carbon, maintaining the quality of lakes, rivers and streams, providing food and shelter for wildlife, and enhancing communities’ resilience to extreme weather events such as floods and droughts.

ALUS relies on the support of governments, businesses and philanthropic foundations to invest in Nature & Climate Solutions to generate positive environmental, economic and social benefits in the communities where they operate — one acre at a time.  To date*, $30 million in funding has been allocated to ALUS communities across Canada, with the investment being multiplied by agricultural producers and communities.

In 2023 alone, ALUS distributed nearly $6.3 million in funding to ALUS communities. That same year, 400 farmers and ranchers joined ALUS as new participants, enrolling over 8,300 additional acres in the program, resulting in the creation of new ALUS wetland, woodland, grassland, and pollinator projects.
