Are Canadian municipalities doing enough with regards to climate action? This session will explore lessons learned from Canadian municipalities. It will also highlight what is being done, what the roadblocks are, and examples of how those roadblocks have been overcome resulting in integrated climate action.

2:00 PM: Defining the Blue Economy in a Post-COVID-19 Canada

As the country emerges from the pandemic, the way business is conducted will change to better protect our people and our resources. What will this mean for investment in the blue economy? How will the business of water change? 

  • Moderator: Andrew Macklin, managing editor of Water Canada
  • Speaker: Irene Hassas, vice president of corporate development and partnerships at Aslan Technologies
  • Speaker: Matt Howard, vice president of water stewardship at The Water Council and director at the Alliance for Water Stewardship-North America

Speakers

Deborah Harford—Executive Director, Simon Fraser University’s Adaptation to Climate Change Team (ACT)

Deborah co-founded ACT in 2006 with Mark Winston and Nancy Olewiler with the goal of protecting ecosystem health while exploring policy options and developing resources for adaptation to a range of climate change impact areas, including water, food, health, biodiversity, energy, infrastructure, and population displacement.

Irene Hassas—Vice President of Corporate Development and Partnerships, Aslan Technologies

As the vice president of corporate development and partnerships at Aslan Technologies, Irene develops strategic plans, partnerships, and business opportunities at the national and international levels for corporate growth and expansion. Irene is also a member of the board of the directors of the Ontario Environment Industry Association (ONEIA), and involved with a number of other associations and advisory committees.

Matt Howard—Vice President of Water Stewardship, The Water Council

Matt oversees The Water Council’s stewardship initiatives which includes the regional partnership and oversight of the Alliance for Water Stewardship’s International Water Stewardship Standard (“AWS Standard”) and System in North America. In this capacity, Matt serves as the Director for AWS North America.

Andrew Macklin—Managing Editor, Water Canada

Andrew is the managing editor of Water Canada. A prolific writer and born story-teller, Andrew excels in engaging audiences across any media platform. He is an excellent public speaker and maintains a considerable network of government contacts and operators who shape the public debate in the water, infrastructure, and environment sectors.
